Studying martial arts has been a positive experience for me in several ways. Two-and-a-half years ago, I joined a small mixed-age karate group in my home town. Originally I had no intention of getting serious about karate. My young son had joined this group and I decided that taking a few classes with him would give us something to enjoy together while giving me some much needed exercise. After about two classes I was completely hooked.
I practiced very hard and started advancing up the belt ranks quickly. Being a newcomer to the martial arts, though, I was a little naive. I didn't realize that mental training and development was just as important as learning the physical skills that develop through practicing punches, kicks, kata, etc.. Today this is the area where I, as well as my family, have seen the most growth. Learning self-discipline and focus has made me a better person in all areas of my life.
Karate has been positive for me in another way. I used to feel like a lot of women frequently feel...like someone's easy victim. I felt that I could easily be mugged in a parking lot while shopping or even snatched by a madman while out for a walk in the country. Today I realize that this could still happen, but I do not worry about it because I feel confident and prepared. I believe this confident feeling makes me less susceptible to a criminal attack.
In addition to feeling self-disciplined and self-confident I feel much stronger and healthier. I have more energy than I used to, I'm more aware of healthy eating habits and I have developed muscle tone. All-in-all I feel great!!
Lastly, studying karate has given me an interest to look forward to other than my family and work responsibilities. As a stay-at-home mom, I am the primary caregiver of our three children. In addition, like most women, I am responsible for the majority of cooking, cleaning and general maintenance of the household. Studying karate has made me a better mother and wife. During the day I am mom, wife and daycare provider and at night I can escape to the dojo leaving behind any frustrations that may have built up throughout the day to concentrate solely on being a good warrior. It cleanses my mind and calms my body. It makes me feel refreshed and ready to handle anything that may come my way.
